If environmental conditions rule out the use of smoke detectors, then a heat detector of the type MD601Ex/MD611Ex may provide an acceptable, though less sensitive, alternative. For general use, and particularly where the ambient temperature may be low, a 'Rate-ofRise' heat sensor is to be preferred. This type of sensor reacts to abnormally high rates of change of temperature and provides the fastest response over a wide range of ambient temperatures. A fixed temperature limit is also incorporated in these detectors. In many environments, e.g. kitchens and boiler rooms, sudden, large changes in temperature are considered 'normal'. Rate-of-rise
